Studio Orchestration: Mentoring the Next Generation of Game Designers
The Objective
Taking an existing curriculum at SAE and transforming it into an immersive, multi-disciplinary studio pipeline. Over 3 months, the focus wasn't just on teaching code or theory—it was about driving confidence, group collaboration, and mechanical storytelling.
1. Deep-Dive Industry Insights
To bridge academic theory with real-world volatility, I brought leading industry experts directly into the studio:
-
Matt Jones (Mixed Media Developer) — On cross-platform execution and visual technology.

-
Cathy Stadler (Marketing Expert) — On commercial strategy and consumer psychography.
-
Nick Hall (Games Attorney) — On intellectual property infrastructure and legal boundaries
2. Strategic Masterclasses Delivered
I designed and executed specialized, thought-provoking lectures built around complex commercial systems:
-
Ecosystem Economics: Deep dives into studio budgeting, intellectual property wars, and how companies leverage tight constraints to maximize player retention.
-
Understanding the Fundamentals Behind Existing Games: Redesigning classic games in order to analyze what worked, and what can be upgraded for a modern market.
-
The Psychology of Loyalty: Deconstructing user demographics and the marketing funnel to prove that player trust is nigh impossible to win, and lightning-fast to lose.
-
Web Game Architecture: Implementing basic music systems, executing strict vi
sual QC frameworks, and maximizing limited materials to build high-fidelity games.
3. Human-Centric Pedagogy & Mentorship
A great creative director builds great teams. In the classroom, this meant protecting the human element behind the screen:
-
Editorial Coaching: Applying my copywriting and editing background to quality-control, audit, and elevate the students' written concepts and pitching styles.
-
Conflict & Burnout Management: Lightly introducing frameworks for managing mental health, handling creative overwhelm, and navigating emotional regulation in high-pressure gaming spaces.
The Impact
By engineering tight structural parameters, the studio became a safe sanctuary for experimentation. At the end of the 3-month block, there was a marked transformation in student confidence, systemic problem-solving, and cross-discipline collaboration, backed by incredibly strong personal testimonials.
